FAQs

Is there an iPhone app?

Not yet. But you don't need one! The web app runs fully in Safari on iPhone and iPad, including audio and location alerts, and there's nothing to download. Add it to your home screen and it behaves much like an app, including saving your premium tour purchases. A native iOS version is on the list and as ever if you have any issues, please email us to let us know.

Why do we need to allow location data?

So it can tell you when you've reached the next stop, and you can keep your phone in your pocket while you walk. Your location is used on your device to trigger those alerts — I don't store it or share it. You can decline and still listen to every tour; you just won't get the automatic prompts.

How much do the tours cost?

Two tours are completely free — the Royal Mile and the Tram-Line. The other four are £4.79 each, or £11.99 for all of them. Once bought, they're yours permanently, with no subscription and nothing to renew.

Do I need to be in Edinburgh to use them?

No. Plenty of people “walk” them from home while planning a trip, then again in person once they arrive. One purchase, two uses.

Does buying a tour remove the ads?

Yes. Any purchase removes ads across the whole app.

How long is each tour, and how much walking is involved?

Between 30 and 45 minutes at a normal pace, covering roughly 2–2.5 km. But there's no clock — stop for lunch halfway and pick it up two hours later if you like.

I've got mobility issues. Are the tours manageable?

Edinburgh is hilly and the Old Town has steps and steep closes. The New Town and Leith tours are the flattest. Because you set the pace, you can rest whenever you need to and finish across two days if that suits you better.
